Clockwork Boy

What is wrong, little clockwork boy?
Why so glum? Why no tick-tock joy?

Is it this: that your cogs are clogged?
Is it that this rain made you rust?

Tick: you feel almost right again.
Tock: you fall with no help from friends.

Coiled up springs, interlocking gears;
Wound by hand many times a year.

Without care, the clock starts to slow.
Loneliness causes rust to grow.

Springs unsprung because no one cares.
No friends here; all are unaware.

Broken ropes, worn from constant use.
Cracked axels, hurt by friends: abused.

Who is there to mend; to repair?
Can you run after you are snared?

Have no fear, little clockwork boy.
Christ is near, to fill you with joy.

He can clean; you will be like new.
No more rust; polished and so true.

So smile now, little clockwork boy!
No more fear, no more worthless toy.

Wound up now to face the new day;
Ready to take the step of faith.

Who can know what adventures wait?
Listen now, hear that storm abate?

Weathered, beaten, pummeled, broken;
Another hurt around each bend.

Barely making it through each year,
Enduring every painful tear.

Until, at last, you were found there;
A shadow of what you once were.

Gentle hands picked you up softly;
Showed you a little mystery:

Every crack, every broken piece,
Used to make a fine masterpiece.

All the dents, scratches and scrapes,
Used by God in what He has made.

You are now something grand and new!
More beautiful than crystal dew.

Clockwork boy, loved and cherished too,
You have joy in the black and blue.

So my dear, little clockwork boy;
Never fear, never lose your joy.

I love you dear, always, ever.
Sleep tonight, a peaceful slumber.

One last thought, little clockwork boy…
I love you lots, in Christ: my joy.

Jolt!

Ever have one of those songs that comes along and, no matter what’s going on, it cheers you up and pretty soon you can’t help smiling? (the song is “Loving You Is Easy” by Chris August)

Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. That moment you’re almost laughing out loud because you actually feel so happy and good!

They can come along when you least expect it. Maybe it’s just the undying optimist in me that can never be suppressed for very long. I suppose that’s one of the best things I’m thankful for, that God gave me a laugh that will never stop, forever.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 is, perhaps, the best way to show this. Specifically, I’m thinking about verse 4:

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

Bad things only last so long before good things come along. Look for those good things! Smile! Laugh!! Dance!!!

Enduring

Laughing with my family about nothing in particular,
Friends joining in without having a clue;
Hurting from the straining of smiling and laughter,
Our cares disappear for a moment or two.

Our burdens are lighter when we’re with each other,
Two backs are stronger than one, I’m told;
Your joys and sorrows are shared with your brothers,
No need to try to endure it alone.

Christ, my Savior, will be mine forever,
Of that He is not doubtable;
He is Hope when there is none elsewhere,
Security infinitely valuable.

“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
Psalm 30:5 (KJV)

The last line is what really caught my attention. It is a nugget that should be taken in the context of the whole, but it is also a timeless truth. For those who are Christ’s, those sealed with the Holy Spirit, our sadness and sorrow can only last for so long. Even if our sorrow lasts to the end of our life, our joy will last forever!

Sleep fixes a lot of things, but one thing that it always seems to do is reset a person back to default. You might only be “reset” for a few minutes until you remember your current plight, but God-given sleep is a rest that does more than just rest our bodies. Our minds, our souls, and our hearts are all given rest when we sleep. Thank God for sleep.

Raining Sunshine

Sometimes, sadness and happiness come at the same time, like when it's sunny and raining!

Sometimes, sadness and happiness come at the same time, like when it’s sunny and raining!

Drops fall down, down from above;
Each shines bright, as bright as the sun.
Even in sadness, sadness with tears;
Joy can be found, found without fear.

Droplets of dew, dew on the grass;
Each, a tiny lens, a lens made of glass.
Our eyes cannot see, see every blessing,
We see only us, and besides us, nothing.

Sunlight hits each, each a small star,
Illumined to brilliance, brightness seen afar.
Christ gives us light, and sight to see;
He is the source, the source of eternity.

So let the sun show, show its bright light;
To the lost world, a world without light.
We are the drops, the drops of sunshine;
To light up the world, the world for Christ.
