Midnight Summer Hike

Late Night Hike of Lazy Mountain

Yes, this is around 10 pm. These are adventures in Alaska: where sunsets last forever, and friends even longer…

Outlook of the World

A place where the mountaintops see the curve of the world, where the sunlight spans the horizons like a river of gold…

Don't Cover the Light

Where the light finds its way into every crack, and every rock glistens in glimmering black…

Lazy Pan

A place where selfies sideline the panorama, and a place where every day is an adventure bonanza.

P.S. – We didn’t get off the mountain until midnight, and it was still light until about 1 am (we had dinner after we got down at a local restaurant).

Summer in Alaska

Summer hike... Alaska style...

Summer hike… Alaska style…

There’s nothing like going for a hike in the summer! Of course, if you go hiking in Alaska, be careful that you don’t go to the wrong place and end up waist deep in snow.

Tread, the Littlest Snowman

We made a snowman named “Tread.” A chipper little fellow!

Tread the Dead Littlest Snowman

Unfortunately… Tread didn’t last long.

The Mourning of Tread

We mourned his passing…

Tread the Great:
A snowman of wonder!
Faced the fate
Of snowmen in summer.

On a hike
In a seeming winter,
Tread did die
By the heat of summer!

Oh Tread! You blockhead!
Why didn’t you listen?!
Oh Tread! Now you’re dead!
Just water on pavement.

So Tread left this world,
An inspiration to all…
To put more salt on the road,
So you won’t slip and fall.

Summertime Soundtrack

Every season seems to need a soundtrack, this is the summer soundtrack. Now remember, this is a soundtrack, like a movie, and this particular soundtrack features songs with few to no words. It’s the mood and feel of the music that reminds me of summer. There are the days of sunshine, the days of simply beautiful and easy-going days, the days of wind, the days of rain, the days of mountainous adventures, the days of dreary darkness, and the days of friends and fun!

Summer is a glorious time, and no one appreciates this more than Alaskans, who rarely see the sun in the winter months. When we see the sun finally, it is exciting and reviving! I thank God for the beautiful and energizing sunlight of summer! So, without further ado, here is the list:

1. Paperman – Christophe Beck
2. Test Drive – John Powell
3. Declan’s Walk – Randy Edelman
4. Siamsa – Ronan Hardiman
5. Duelling Violins – Ronan Hardiman
6. Slip Jig – Gaelic Storm
7. Death Ride to Durango – Gaelic Storm
8. The Storm – Gaelic Storm
9. Let It Go – The Piano Guys
10. Skidoo – Máiréad
11. Explosive – Bond
12. Palladio – Escala
13. Code Name Vivaldi – The Piano Guys
14. Requiem for a Dream – Escala
(I wanted to include “Requiem for a Tower” by Escala, but couldn’t justify it because it sounds too similar to “Requiem for a Dream”)
15. One Last Message – Andrew Lockington
16. Leaving London – Patrick Doyle
17. Throw the Coins – Patrick Doyle

Summer Green

Summer Green

As we reach Midsummer’s Eve,
I stop and see, all the green;
leaves, grass, moss and trees,
in sunshine’s bright and brilliant beams.
Twilight comes and passes fast,
The moon still hides in Hatcher Pass;
I wait in the land of the Midnight Sun,
Wait for tomorrow to finally come.
Adventure awaits each day of mine,
Some slow, some fast, and some just right;
I enjoy the day, the sun so bright,
I thank the Lord for His sacrifice.
Like the leaf that lives in seasons but once,
So Christ gave salvation to all of us;
Though dead on a twig he fell to the earth,
Springtime brought resurrection, new birth!
So I look at this leaf that grows,
And wonder at what God has done;
This green creation He did sew alone,
The branch it stays home until autumn.
When it leaves the twig, it mourns so sound,
Joins it’s brothers on the ground;
It will return when the season comes,
When it does, it will sing a brand new song!
————-
My friend so green, with eyes of a leaf,
Looks to find, a sweet relief.
God blows the wind, wherever He will,
Follow the wind, follow His will…

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee

We enter the battlefield,
Like champions we march;
To do battle with the other,
A violent deathmatch.
The flick of a wrist,
The wrench of an arm;
The bodies will twist,
But we march ever on!
We run to and fro,
Like hounds in a chase;
To catch the white rabbit,
Which always escapes.
Why do we do this?
What purpose does it serve,
To go crashing and smashing,
Til we all go home hurt?
For glory, for honor,
Or so it might seem;
But it is for Christ,
That I, enjoy this misery.
The King of the Ages,
Ancient before days;
Has given His Word,
A mighty strong blade.
We fight a long war,
In the battle of life;
But I will never surrender
Now that He’s in my life.
I will run onward,
Past all the enemies;
And take the frisbee,
All the way to victory.

Sunshine Blue

Sunshine Blue

As I ride the sky through the water so deep,
Past mountains, clouds, and submarines;
I think of the friends who help me to fly,
Through the storms, wakes, and rapids of life.
I fly through the air without a care,
My wings, the oars, help me to soar;
Not on my own, lest I should fall,
Together, we row and paddle ’til dawn.
To the horizon we travel, so far,
Not knowing the way, “Maps are too hard”;
Round bends and streams and islands we go,
Through tunnels and portals we continue to row!
We were almost there, or so it would seem,
‘Til the Whoshliverbeliner started to scream…
Oh how it thundered, so deep and loud;
With ripples in the sky, it shook every mount.
We barely survived, the craft started to sink!
“Full power ahead!” The captain did speak;
So we pushed through that gargantuous storm,
Made it across, and shortly fled home.
Now I sit here, thinking back on the days,
Of friends, adventures, and many tall tales;
The sun starts to set, dusk draws near;
Sleep starts to take me, another quest for me there…
